🚨 Da’Shaun L. Harrison at Socialism 2026 argues that the political deployment of GLP-1 drugs is “fascistic” because they exist in “a world fixated on genociding fat people.”

“The political deployment of GLP-1s is fascistic, not because individuals take them, but because the conditions under which they become necessary are shaped by a world fixated on genociding fat people.”

And to explain why that is supposedly fascistic, Harrison turns to Frantz Fanon and “Black flesh under colonial surveillance.”

If GLP-1s are already “body fascism,” the dual and triple agonists are going to require an entirely new theoretical vocabulary.

The political deployment of GLP-1s is fascistic, not because individuals take them, but because the conditions under which they become necessary are shaped by a world fixated on genociding fat people. This is a structural critique that asks what happens when the conditions produced by capitalism, by public health, by the state apparatus, and by anti-black desire, align around a single bodily ideal that leaves little to no room for divergence and punishes any body that does.

Whereas earlier diet drugs were often associated with vanity or addiction, GLP-1s are positioned as responsible medicine, promising relief rather than restraint, but to understand why the deployment of GLP-1s is fascistic requires turning to Frantz Fanon's account of black flesh under colonial surveillance.

There's a lot to unpack in this post, but this premise right here:

are shaped by a world fixated on genociding fat people.

First, the use of the word "genocide" is very questionable, but lets ignore that for the moment.

Who, in the author's opinion, are targeting overweight people to be killed?

"Them", "the man", "deep state", "big pharma" or it's all a CIA conspiracy to begin with. You should never specifically identify a conspirator in situations like this as the point is to infate conspiracy theories and keep the category broad enough to accuse anyone else of being part of that conspiracy.

Take your pick of those, but there are plenty more.

The real driver for GLP-1 is not to eliminate people who are overweight, it's to make fuck tons of money off of people who are (or who believe they are) overweight or people who are extremely vulnerable to thinking they are being perceived in a way that is against what they think is "normal".

If we're were to apply that obscure definition of "genocide" to Viagra, it kinda points out how back-assward that definition is.

When applied correctly and responsibly, drugs like GLP-1 and Viagra do the exact opposite of "genocide" by either promoting reproduction or extending lifespan enough to enable successful reproduction.

This was my conclusion too for GLP-1 drugs. I'm not a candidate that has the need, but I was initially reluctant to express support for GLP-1 drugs. What changed my mind was a cardiologist that pointed out the largest causes of death of folks that are obese is Cardiovascular Disease and Type 2 Diabetes. GLP-1 drugs specifically lower weight and change diet in patients lowering the risk of both of these killer diseases. The point of the Cardiologist was (paraphrased) its possible there is an minor or moderate undiscovered consequence of GLP-1 drugs, but not taking them (for the folks that need them) are absolutely facing the very real, very real, and very deadly conditions of Cardiovascular Disease and Type 2 Diabetes. So avoiding using GLP-1 drugs because of possible future health concerns of the drugs is facing deadly known risks. After that, I support anyone that wants to improve their health by taking GLP-1 drugs.

We share the same point. GLP-1s are the opposite of killing obese people. Its trying to avoid the things that are already killing them today.
