I wanted to learn game development instead of playing because I got bored. I used to do programming as a hobby at hs, but I havent coded for 18+ months. Now I am back, slowly learning and trying not to use ai (hard)

I am 19 and I have a blue collar job, decent pay but all my money goes to savings for an unrelated reason, I left with little money to spend. I have 4-5 hours everyday for this.

Should I start see it as a side part time job? Maybe enough to buy an used old civic? I watched some youtube videos about it and it may be doable, I am not trying to become the 1% or the next schedule 1/stardew valley/minecraft. I am unaware of the current market what are my expectations should be.

I dont have anyone to feed ahah, what harm to try right?

It's absolutely not a profitable side gig. Everyone and their dog can use AI to ship a game. Steam is overrun by cheap games.

Games like Minecraft and Stardew Valley were developed with a very large number of man-hours over several years.

If you want to do it as a hobby, great, but it's not going to buy you a Civic. If that's what you want, do some side work in your trade and you'll make a couple grand within a few months.

This, but a bit more in a different direction.

You have a resource available to you that fewer other software developers have. You have the skills, expereince, and real-time exposure to your blue collar trade. You know what problems and challenges exist in your trade, and if you improve your coding skills, you might be able to write software to address some of those. The insight you have from your day job would be very valuable.

Keep in mind, you don't have to write the ultimate application that solves every problem perfectly. You just need to write something that makes a single problem slightly better. What kind of problems exist in your day job?

        • Scheduling for yourself or your co-workers
        • Quality checks for work completed
        • order/delivery process for materials
        • safety standards adherence reporting

You know the problems. If you increase your coding skills, you can be someone that delivers a solution, and earn a good chunk of money doing so.
