But, their core mandate is, and should be, to keep all people living in Canada connected and in communication, no matter how remotely located they are in the country. (Full disclosure, I'm not Canadian) I agree with this mandate. However, I'm trying to separate my familiarity/comfort vs the evolution of what "connected and in communication" truly means in 2026 vs the original definition from Canada Post's founding in 1867. Back then post mail was absolutely the best method, no question, but is it still today? Electronic methods of communication have eclipsed physical postal mail in every way in our lives. Does it make sense to continue to subsidize and support an expensive method of communication that has been largely replaced by society? Here's where we should probably talk about specific product/service offerings. Does physical mail (letters) make sense to continue? Probably not. Does package/parcel delivery? Yes. So perhaps the infrastructure for handling letters could be deprecated and those resources be put to package/parcel deliver. Denmark's PostNord ended mail delivery in 2025. Perhaps that's a good place to look not only for how the executed it, but how they evaluated PostNord to arrive at their decision.
