No one is going to see the tiny arrow controls and scroll sideways through the multiple pinned posts. They're just going to see the top one. Over time people will stop pinning any more than one post because there will be no point, and #Mastodon will be just the same as every other generic social media platform.
The pinned post carousel absolutely should have been an option in the settings, not swept across the board as a default.
The ability to pin multiple posts and have them visible at the top of your profile was among the features that made #Mastodon more appealing than other platforms. Now that's been wiped out overnight without any option for users to choose whether their profile reflects the change. What happened to respecting user's choice or preferences?
Whoever has been in charge of UI changes for the past couple of updates really needs to be assigned to something else. How much more are they going to destroy?
