Just wondering what sized images most folk post? I've been using 1024 pixels as a guide, but it appears the default for #Mastodon could be quite a bit larger? (I couldn't find anything saying that Mastodon.scot requires a smaller limit than the default.)
1024 is good for me as it's also the default on TalkPhotography, I think. But it looks a bit small! Pixelfed images can be bigger AIUI.

@carusb One problem is that photographers often shell out for 4K or even 8K monitors, while most people are viewing the photos on phone screens. I would guess that the most common monitors used by non-photographers and artists are 2K, which is what I've compromised on. So 1024 is what I think is big enough for most people. But then there's upscaling and downscaling to take into account. And the results of that can be unpredictable.

@garry @carusb I've chosen to post on social media (Pixelfed...) with a limited size. I keep best quality for my website, prints, publications. I made that choice because (1) people are viewing the photos mainly on smartphones, there is no need for a better quality there (2) there is an environmental cost to share larger pictures (3) if people need better quality (publication...) they can contact me.
For my needs, it's good enough for Pixelfed.️ My parameters : large edge 1000px - 72 ppi
