Language learners!

Language learners! I need your help!
I’m going into the classroom this week with 8 year olds to introduce them to French and want to impart some wisdom from all of us who have learned more than one language (all languages matter - also open to programming languages!)
What is something you’ve learned through learning a language - that is not about the language itself, but about learning it?
An example follows! 🧵

@lifewithtrees Off the top of my head:
. Learn something about the history and culture of the countries where the language is spoken.
. Find what is common between your language and theirs, e.g. the same words pronounced or spelled similarly
. Find movies and videos in the language and listen, listen, listen. Then watch some more, and listen!
. Don't just learn individual words and bits of grammar; learn regularly used 'chunks', e.g. phrases, sayings, etc. (1/2) -

@lifewithtrees Oh, one more. You will struggle to learn a new language if you don't know your own very well. For example, if you use an adjective instead of an adverb in your own language, people will understand you. There's no guarantee that this will be the case with a foreign language. If this happens to you, someone will tell you, and you can then brush up on your skills with your own language. It's really worth it if you want to be understood.
