Language learners!

Language learners! I need your help!
I’m going into the classroom this week with 8 year olds to introduce them to French and want to impart some wisdom from all of us who have learned more than one language (all languages matter - also open to programming languages!)
What is something you’ve learned through learning a language - that is not about the language itself, but about learning it?
An example follows! 🧵
-
@lifewithtrees Off the top of my head:
. Learn something about the history and culture of the countries where the language is spoken.
. Find what is common between your language and theirs, e.g. the same words pronounced or spelled similarly
. Find movies and videos in the language and listen, listen, listen. Then watch some more, and listen!
. Don't just learn individual words and bits of grammar; learn regularly used 'chunks', e.g. phrases, sayings, etc. (1/2). Don't try and translate literally; know what you want to say and find words and phrases that get the point across.
. As well as what you're given to learn, learn how to talk about yourself and things you're interested in.
. Most people appreciate it when you try to speak to them in their own language, and won't be bothered by your mistakes. (2/2) -
