Diverticula

Diverticula most commonly occur in the following sites of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract:

Colon (Large Intestine)

Sigmoid Colon: The most common site, especially in Western populations, due to increased intraluminal pressure and a diet low in fiber.
Descending Colon: Less frequently than the sigmoid colon but still relatively common.
Esophagus

Zenker's Diverticulum: Located at the pharyngoesophageal junction, just above the upper esophageal sphincter.
Duodenum

Commonly in the second part of the duodenum, near the ampulla of Vater, as duodenal diverticula.
Jejunum and Ileum (Small Intestine)

Less common, but diverticula can occur, particularly jejunal diverticula in elderly individuals.
Stomach

Gastric Diverticula: Rare, often found near the lesser curvature or posterior gastric wall.

While these are the typical locations, the sigmoid colon remains the most common site overall due to the unique pressures and structure of this part of the GI tract.
